The Yalta and Potsdam conferences were called to help the Allies decide what would happen to
Europe and in particular Germany, at the end of the Second World War
The Yalta conference was in
February 1945
The Potsdam conference was in
July 1945
Yalta = Germany will
Pay reparations of $20 million, half to go to USSR
Yalta = Germany will be
Split into 4 sections, one for France, Britain, USA and USSR, along with Berlin which resided in the USSR’s sector
Yalta = In Eastern Europe
Stalin would allow free Elections
Yalta = Poland
Would get land from Germany, lose land to USSR
Yalta = League of Nations
Replaced with United Nations, which the USA would join
Potsdam = Reparations
Would be taken from each country’s are of occupation.
Potsdam = USSR received
Industrial equipment from Western Zones. Never occurred
Potsdam = Poland
Borders agreed, British and Americans weren’t happy
Potsdam = Austria
Was divided into four zones, independence regained 1955
Potsdam = USA rejected
Letting USSR help run the Ruhr (rich industrial area) and a share in the occupation of Japan
Potsdam = Trials of
Nazi war criminals in Nuremberg
What changed between Yalta and Potsdam?
1) Roosevelt died, replaced by Truman, suspicious of USSR
2) Tory Churchill not re-elected, replaced by Labour less experienced Atlee
3) USSR was expanding westwards (Poland, Finland, Baltic, Czechoslovakia, Romania)
