Instillation of hope

Universality
the recognition that others share similar events, thoughts, reactions, and life experiences and that one is not alone
Imparting of information
the exchange of ideas, between members and the group leader, on how to cope with the problems of daily living.
Altruism
the positive feelings experienced by individual when they provide support, reassurance, suggestions, and insights to other group members
Family recapitulation
the discovery of unfinished issues with family members as it relates to their interpersonal relationships with other group members.
Socializing techniques
the learning of basic social skills such as being attuned to process, problem solving, and conflict resoultion
Imitative behavior
the process in which a member observes from other members and applies what they have learned in his or her own life.
Interpersonal learning
the gaining of self-knowledge that occurs as members interact with one another
Group cohesiveness
the sense of connection to the group which is supported through the acceptance and support that member receives from others in the group
Catharsis
the expression of deeply felt emotions coupled with acceptance from others
Existential factors
the feeling of group support when a member is struggling with the realities of existence - death, isolation, and freedom.
