Y9 topic 1 Flashcards
Solution
A solution is made when a substance (solute) dissolved into a liquid
Solvent
any substance, usually liquid, which is capable of dissolving one or several substances, thus creating a solution.
Solute
A substance that is dissolved in a solution
Balanced equation
A balanced symbol equation has the same number of atoms of each element on both sides of the arrow.
Reactant
The substances that are involved in a chemical reaction and that are changed by it
Product
The chemical substances which are formed due to a chemical reaction between two or more chemical substances
Miscible
Liquids that can mix together. Alcohol and water
Imiscible
Liquids that can not mix together. Oil and water
Evaporation
When a liquid gains energy and becomes a gas, can happen at any temperature
Condensation
When a gas looses energy (gets colder) and becomes a liquid.
Distillation
A separation method that is the process of evaporation followed by condensation
Distillate
The pure liquid obtained after distillation
Boiling point
A temperature at which the molecules are evaporating at the fast rate (liquid=gas)
