Y9 Topic 1 Flashcards
What is an atom?
the smallest particle of a chemical element that can exist.
What is a molecule?
A collection of two or more atoms held together by chemical bonds.
How are the atoms in a molecule linked together ?
The atoms in a molecule are linked together through chemical bonds, which can be broadly of two types: Ionic Bonds(transfer through electrons) Covalent bonds(the equal sharing of electrons from both participating atoms).
What is a compound?
A compound is a substance that contains two or more elements that are chemically combined. The elements in a compound are present in fixed proportions
What are the three types of compounds?
Ionic, covalent (molecular)
What is an Element?
A substance made of one type of atom only.
What are the chemical formulae of the elements neon, nitrogen and sodium?
Ne
N2
Na
How many elements are in Na2CO3?
3 Na2|C|O3
What is an electron?
a negatively charged subatomic particle that has almost no mass
How many electrons can you fit into a proton?
2000
What is a proton?
the positively charged particles which are present in the nucleus of an atom and have a charge of plus 1
Why are protons so important?
it gives the atom its identity according to the number of protons in an atom
What is a neutron?
subatomic particles found inside the nucleus of every atom
What does a neutron do?
help stabilise the nucleus of an atom
What is a solution?
solution is a special type of mixture composed of two or more substances
