Y9 Natural Hazards Flashcards
What is a natural hazard?
A natural hazard is a physical process or event which has the potential to cause loss of life and damage to property.
What are tectonic hazards?
They are hazards caused by the tectonic plates.
What are climatic hazards?
They are hazards cause by the weather.
What are geomorphological hazards?
They are hazards caused by the ground.
What are Biological Hazards?
These are diseases.
What are plate tectonics?
This is when the tectonic plates are moving and sometimes create different things, such as volcanoes or earthquakes.
Where are most volcanoes and mountains.
On or near plate margins
What is a plate margin?
It is the edge of a tectonic plate.
What is a constructive plate margin?
It is when the plates move apart and let magma through.and create a shield volcano.
What is a destructive plate margin?
It is when Oceanic crust and continental crust push together and the oceanic crust is forced down and it melts in the mantle and at may cause an earthquake. Magma rises through the cracks and forms a composite volcano.
What is a conservative plate margin?
It is when two plates rub past each other and create pressure which can cause a snap and create an earthquake.
What is the difference between continental crust and oceanic crust?
Continental crust is thicker and lighter than the oceanic crust.
What are the primary impacts of volcano eruptions and earthquakes?
What are the secondary impacts of volcano eruptions and earthquakes?
Loss of life, destruction of property, injures, Loss of jobs, and more.
Homelessness, poverty, disease and more.
Why do people stay where there is risk of volcano eruptions?
Because volcanoes can provide fertile soil for crops.
How can monitoring, prediction, protection and preparation can reduce the risk of earthquakes and volcano eruptions?
They can be used to find out when one will happen, to train people how to stay safe during one and how to build buildings that can withstand them.
