Y9 Digestion + Enzymes Flashcards
What does lipase break down
Fats
What does lipase break down fats into
Fatty acids + glycerol
What does protease break down
Proteins
What does protease break down protein into
Amino acids
What does amylase break down
Sugar
What does amylase break down starch into
Glucose
Why do molecules like e.g. protiese have to be digested
They are large + insoluble
They need to be broken down into macronutrients so they can be absorbed into the blood stream.
What do enzymes do
Speed up the digestion of starch proteins + fats
Where is amylase created
Salivary glands
Pancreas
Small intestine
Where is protease created
Stomach
Pancreas
Small intestine
Where is lipase created
Pancreas + small intestine
What does bile do
-produced in liver and stored in gall bladder
-bile needed to neutralise stomach acid
-so lipase can digest lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
-bile emulsifies fat by breaking it down
-lipids are broken down into smaller droplets so lipase has a larger surface area to work on
