Y8 Physics Sounds/ Hearing Flashcards
What is a sound?
A sound is a vibration
The air particles move and carry the sound to our ears.
If the amplitude is low
What will the wave look like?
The wave will be short and not tall
What is sound measured with?
Hertz /Hz
High amplitude means…
Tall waves but the space stays the same
What is an ACOUSTIC guitar
A hollow guitar
What is the wavelength?
The wavelength is the distance taken up by one complete wave
What is frequency?
Number of waves per second/minute/hour
What is amplitude?
Loudness
Height of wave
Half of a wavelength
Amplified means
How loud it is
Natural frequency is..
Is a frequency at which two objects vibrate at the same frequency
If a finger is ran around a glass it sings
explain how
The glass vibrates at a certain frequency
This is called the natural frequency
If we run a finger around a glass too fast does it sing?
What about too slow?
No it has to be exactly the right frequency for the glass to vibrate
What is frequency measured in?
Hertz/ Hz
Do ALL objects have a natural frequency?
Yes
Why does hollow space amplify the sound?
It amplifies the sound because the waves travel through air and it echos.
