Y8 Geography Flashcards
Abrasion
When sediment hits the cliff along with the wave at force
Swash
Where the waves push sediment up the beach
Backwash
Where the waves pull sediment down the beach
Long shore drift
The transportation of sediment along the shoreline
Why is geology important on a coastline
The geology influences the landforms that we see there
Deposition
When sediment is picked up and then dropped somewhere different
what causes deposition
Deposition is caused by the speed at which the water is moving (e.g. if the water slows down it will drop the sediment)
headland formation
Headlands can be made of harder or softer rock but usually a band of softer rock between harder rock
bay formation
A bay is the gap between 2 sides of the cliff that has been eroded away
Cave formation
The cave starts as a crack and eventually grows bigger until its a cave
Arch formation
The cave breaks through the headland and creates an Arch
Stack formation
A stack is when the arch breaks through and creates a stack which is separate from the cliff
Stump formation
A stump is created by a stack being eroded down until its a stump
Wave cut platform formation
A wide gently sloping surface found at a cliffs base that extends into the sea.
Spit formation
A spit is the beach continued out to sea
