Recusant
Someone who refused to go to church (£20,000 in today’s money as a fine if you don’t go once)
Martin Luther
Started protestantism in 1517 due to him:
-Wanting people to have their own opinion on the Bible rather than depending on the church’s interpretation
-Not liking the idea of paying money to have your sins forgiven, that meant only rich could go to heaven, he believed it should be judged off faith in God
-Being dependant on the church to make every decision for you
Henry VIII
Ruled 1509-1547
Supported reformation after he realised he could: -Gain power (people wouldn’t look up to the pope as much)
-War with france (if he had more power then he could tax more, which would fund his wars)
Act of supremacy
This made the king the ‘supreme head of the church of england’
Act of succession
This ensured that any children from anne boleyn and henry were legitimate claims to the throne
The treason act
This made it high treason to question the position of the king as supreme head of church, even in words
Why no monasteries is a problem
No monasteries = no one caring for the sick + no money for ordinary = deaths = rebellion 1536 = deaths
Assimilate
To fit in
Civil war
A war within the same country/nation, usually sparked by religion, politics, economy or social conditions
Divine rite of kings
God chose/appointed the king, so any decision of the latter is one of the former
Puritan
A very faithful/extreme protestant
