Y8 Cycle 2 Maths Flashcards
Brackets
Symbols used in pairs to group things together
Expand
Multiplying to remove brackets
How do you expand a single bracket?
To expand a single bracket, use the grid method and multiply all the terms
How do you factorise multiple terms into a single bracket?
To factorise multiple terms into a single bracket, use the grid method, putting the highest common factor outside of the grid
Less
A smaller amount
Greater
A bigger amount
Sequence
A list of numbers or objects in a special order
What is a term to term rule for a sequence?
A term to term rule explains how you go from one number to the next number in a sequence, e.g. add 3.
Difference
The result of subtracting one number from another
Express
To write or say something in a certain way
How do you express a number as a fraction of another number?
To express a number as a fraction of another number, divide it
by the other number.
How do you express a number as a percentage of another?
To express a number as a percentage of another, first express it as a fraction, then convert the fraction into a percentage
Increase
Make something bigger
Decrease
Make something smaller
Estimate
To find a value that is close enough to the right answer.
Term
In algebra, a term is either a single number or variable, or numbers and variables multiplied together
What is the nth term?
The nth term is a formula which allows us to find the value of any term in a sequence (e.g. if the nth term is 2n + 1, then the 10th term is 2 x 10 + 1)
How do you find the nth term in a sequence?
Nth term = difference(n) + adjustment
Find the difference between the terms,
write out that times table, and then find the adjustment (which is how much is added or subtracted from the first term in the sequence)
e.g. nth term of 3,5,7,9 is 2n + 1
Expression
In algebra, an expression is multiple terms grouped together with operators (such as + or x)
Inequality
An inequality compares two values, showing if one is less than, or greater than, the other
How do you solve an inequality?
Solving an inequality is like solving an equation. You can add, subtract, multiply, or divide on both sides until the variable is on its own.
Use a multiplication grid to expand double brackets, then collect like terms
Solve
To find a value (or values) we can put in place of a variable that makes an equation true
How do you solve an equation?
To solve an equation I want to find the value of x by using inverse operations on both sides of the equals sign
To solve an equation involving brackets, it can help to first expand the brackets, then solve as usual.
Variable
A symbol for a value we don’t know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y
