What is a simile?
describes something by comparing it to someone else with the words like or as
What is a metaphor?
describes an object in a way that isn’t literally true
What is caesura?
a break in the flow of sound, usually in the middle of a line
What is enjambment?
the continuation of a sentence or phrase from one line of poetry to the next
What is tone and tonal shift?
the attitude toward the subject of the audience, authors often shift the tone in a peice of writing
What is iambic pentameter?
a rhythm of structure that combines unstressed syllables and stressed syllables in groups of five
What is personification?
when you give a non-human thing a human feeling or action
What is alliteration?
the repetition of the same sound at the start of a series of words in the same sentence
What is a rhyme scheme?
a formal arrangement of lines in a stanza or a poem
What is rhythm?
an audible pattern in verse established by the intervals between stressed syllables
What is repetition?
when a single word or phrase is used multiple times in short succession for effect
What is onomatopoeia?
the naming of a thing or action by imitation of natural sounds
What is slang?
a type of language consisting of words and phrases that are very informal
What is colloquial language?
an informal way of speaking
What is nonsensical language?
a word or phrase that has no meaning or make little sense
