Biodiversity
variety of plants and animals.
Biome
a large area of land with a particular climate, and type of animals and plants.
Climate
the general weather conditions and patterns in an area over a long period of time (years, decades).
Climate zones
areas of the world with similar climates (temperatures and precipitation).
Conservation
protecting species plants and animals from extinction and maintaining and restoring habitats.
Deciduous
a tree that sheds it leaves in autumn.
Deforestation
cutting down trees.
Ecosystem
a community of plants and animals that live and work together within a certain environment.
Equator
the imaginary line that runs around the middle of the earth (0 degrees latitude).
Fauna
the animals that normally live in a particular biome.
Flora
the plants that normally grow in a particular biome.
Latitude
imaginary lines which go around the earth horizontally.
Longitude
imaginary lines which go around the earth vertically, called meridians.
Prime meridian
imaginary line running through Greenwich London (0 degrees longitude).
Temperate
mild weather, further away from the equator.
