Jataka Tales
Stories from ancient times about the previous lives of the Buddha, when he was still on his journey to becoming enlightened.
Siddhartha
The name of the man who would later become the Buddha.
Four Sights
Teaching from the Jataka Tales about Siddhartha Gautama’s experience of illness, old age, death and a holy man. These sights led him to give up his life of luxury, to follow an ascetic lifestyle, in search of the truth about suffering.
Ascetic
A life free from worldly pleasures, and involves giving up of material possessions. An ascetic life often has the aim of pursuing religious and spiritual goals.
Middle Way
The path of moderation that the Buddha discovered. It means avoiding extreme ways of living, like too much pleasure or too much self-punishment
Three Realisations
Three Realisations: These are the three important truths that the Buddha discovered on his journey to enlightenment:
The Reality of Suffering: Understanding that life includes pain, aging, and death.
The Cause of Suffering: Realizing that our desires and attachments cause suffering.
The End of Suffering: Knowing that by letting go of desires, we can end suffering and reach peace (Nirvana).
Mara
Mara is the evil one, a symbol of temptation and obstacles. He tried to distract Siddhartha from reaching enlightenment by sending negative thoughts and desires.
