Y10 AP3 Revision Flashcards
Coasts
What is transportation?
The movement of sediment in the sea and along the coast by waves
Erosion
The weathering away of rocks on the coastlines
What is deposition?
When the water slows down and doesn’t have enough energy to carry sediment, so drops it
Can be caused by:
-waves starting to slow down and lose energy.
-shallow water.
-sheltered areas, eg bays.
-little or no wind.
What is weathering?
The breaking down or dissolving of rocks and minerals.
What is hydraulic action?
The sheer force of water crashing against the coastline causing material to be dislodged and carried away by the sea. Wave force can create pockets of air or water that expand and crack, cracking off more sediment.
What is attrition?
The force of rocks bashing against each other, causing pieces to break off and, over time, giving rocks a smooth, rounded shape.
What is solution (erosion)?
When sea water dissolves certain types of rock, most commonly chalk and limestone.
What is traction?
When large stones and boulders roll along the sea floor.
What is saltation?
When small rocks and pebbles bounce along the river bed.
What is suspension?
A method of transporting very fine sediment in a river such as clay. The sediment is probably eroded from larger rocks upstream and is then carried in the water. When the sediment is deposited from the water it is known as silt.
What is solution (transportation)?
When minerals in rocks like chalk and limestone are dissolved in sea water and then carried in solution.
