Xylem and Phloem Flashcards
What is the xylem responsible for transporting?
Water and mineral ions
What is responsible for waterproofing the cells?
Lignin
What are the properties of lignin?
-Strengthens the walls mechanically.
-Deposited in a spiral, annular or reticulate pattern, allowing xylem to stretch as plant grows and allows stem/branch to bend.
What pull does the xylem have and why?
A transpiration pull as it’s responsible for transporting water + mineral ions up the plant.
What are the non-lignified pits and what are they responsible for?
Regions where end cell wall has been lost. This allows H20 + mineral ions to leave xylem.
What is the xylem parechyma?
Acts as a food + water store.
Features of the xylem?
Part of the vascular bundle, transports water + mineral ions, doesn’t transport in both directions, has lignin in the cell walls
