Xx Flashcards
Temp of ocean currents
Warm or cold, affects climate of coastal areas
What helps warm the British isles in the winter?
Warm currents from the Gulf of Mexico called the Atlantic drift
What does the North Atlantic drift warm
Prevailing winds
What are prevailing winds
They are the direction in which the wind blows most frequently
Which is the warmest part of the uk
South-west, escude that’s where the wind hits and warms the temp.
How does the directions of winds have effects on temperatures?
Because if they are coming from the south or north it is likely that it would be warmer south and wild be colder from north . Eg
South westerly would contain warmth for the UK
What type of high wind speed could cause many human+physical effects?
155mph
Homes, pets, livestock, people
= damages
Low wind speed+causes
74-95mph
- produce some damage
- floods
- minor damage
Biggest influence on uk’s climate
Circulation cells (justify a how the uk’s climate changes all year round.) leads to unsettled weather
What is the uk’s climate named as?
Temperate
Maritime influence
Oceanic sir patterns
Cool summers, warm winters
What is circulation cells
UK is located near the ‘boundary’ between the northern férrel + polar circulation cells.
Warm air from south and cool air from north meet=unsettled weather
UK= F cell (Ferrell cell)
What is a jet stream
Forms at boundaries
Significant temperature difference
Affect movement of other weather systems
What is altitude
Higher the altitude te cooler it is
-1 degrees 100m up
What makes precipitation on hill tops
When the air is forced to rise up over highland, moisture + condensed = precipitation on hill tops
Where does great variations in temp occur?
Upland areas with sunny south-facing slopes
London = how many days of rainfall?
9.8
What is a tropical storm
Extreme weather event (intense low pressure)
How do tropical storms develop
Over warm tropical oceans where sea temps exceed 27 degrees
What times of year do tropical storms occur?
Early autumn, late summer
What affects the strength of a tropical cyclone
The track. The further it travels over the ocean, the more heat and moisture it collects, so increasing its strength
Where do tropical cyclones form in the world
Caribbean Sea, South China Sea, Indian Ocean
What force needs to be formed in order for a tropical cyclone to occur?
A rotation force
How do we predict tropical cyclones
High density cloud and eye
When do tropical cyclones form
Northern tropic (June+November)
Southern tropic (nov+April)
What are airmasses?
Parcels of air, take on characteristics of whatever area they travel over
5 airmasses that affect UK weather
Polar airtime Tropical maritime Arctic maritime Tropical continental Polar continental
What are the natural causes of climate change?
Solar variation, volcanism, milankoutich cycles
3 negative impacts of climate change
Loss of ice in cold countries (loss of habitats)
Loss of population (coral attolls evacuating New Zealand)
Glaciers decreasing
