xx Flashcards
How do plants take in carbon dioxide and what do they use if for?
Plants absorb carbon dioxide through their stomata for photosynthesis to produce glucose
How does carbon move from plants to animals
Animals eat plants or other animals transferring the carbon in the food chain
Why is nitrogen important for living things?
Nitrogen is a key component of amino acids, proteins, and DNA, essential for growth and development
What are the three things plants need for photosynthesis
Carbon dioxide (CO2), Water, and sunlight
What is cellular respiration?
Process of breaking down glucose to release energy (ATP)
What is cohesion?
Attraction between water molecules due to hydrogen bonding
allows water to form droplets and creates surface tension
What is the density of water as a solid compared to a liquid?
Ice is less dense than liquid because water molecules form a crystalline structure when frozen
Allows ice to float, insulating aquatic life in cold environments
What does it mean that water is polar and why important?
Slight positive charge on the hydrogen atoms and slight negative charge on the oxygen atom.
Polarity allows water to form hydrogen bonds and dissolve many substances
