Indications
Slight headache, chills without sweating, cough with watery sputum, stuffy nose, dry throat, a dry, white tongue coating, and a wiry pulse
Diagnostic Pattern
Externally-contracted cool-dryness interfering with the disseminating, clearing, and downward-directing functions of the Lungs
Chief
- Xìng rén: disseminates Lung qi and stops coughing
- Zĭ sū yè: releases the exterior cold by promoting moderate sweating
Deputies
-Qián hú: directing qi downward and releasing the exterior
- Jié gĕng: causes Lung qi to descend and stops the coughing
- Zhĭ ké: moves the qi, expands the chest, and stops the coughing by regulating the qi
Assistants
- Chén Pí, Fú Líng, Zhì Bàn Xià: regulate the qi of the middle burner and thereby transform the phlegm

Shēng Jiāng, Dà Zăo, Gān Căo: harmonize the actions of the other herbs and regulate the nutritive and protective qi; contribute both to the release of the exterior and the regulation of the middle qi
