X-rays Flashcards
What are x-rays a type of?
X-rays are a type of electromagnetic radiation.
The more energy X-ray have, the more..?
The more energy X-rays have, the more ionising they are.
What does an X-ray machine consist of?
An X-ray machine consists of an evacuated tube that contains two electrodes.
What is a negative electrode called?
A negative electrode is called the cathode.
What is a positive electrode called?
A positive electrode is called the anode.
What happens in an X-ray machine?
An X-ray machine consists of an evacuated tube that contains two electrodes. The negative electrode is a wire filament. When it is heated it becomes an electron gun, as it emits electrons in a process called thermionic emission. The other electrode is an anode. When there is a large potential difference between the anode and the cathode, the electrons are accelerated towards the anode. The tube is evacuated so that the electrons do not collide with other particles as they cross the tube.
What will a higher potential difference mean?
A higher potential difference will produce X-rays with greater energy.
What happens if the temperature of the cathode is increase?
If the temperature of the cathode is increased, the number of electrons emitted increases and this increases the number of X-rays produced.
What are the 2 different equations for kinetic energy?
kinetic energy = 1/2 mv2
or
kinetic energy = eV
What happens when you double the distance from the source?
When you double the distance from the source, the strength decreases to a quarter.
What does the strength decrease according to?
The inverse square law.
