X-Ray Equipment and Image Processing Flashcards

1
Q

What is the function of the glass envelope?

A

Creates and maintains a vacuum to increase the efficiency and productivity of x-rays, so that the electrons do not collide with any impurities such as air that could destroy the circuit. It also supports the components within it, e.g. the cathode and anode.

Q

What is the purpose of the step-UP transformer?

A

Increases the mains voltage of 240V up to the high voltage of 20,000 - 150,000V required for x-ray production

Q

What is the purpose of the oil that is contained within the x-ray tube?

A

Facilitates heat removal. The oil insulates high voltage components of the tube and absorbs heat.

Q

What is the purpose of the collimator?

A

Shapes and limits the beam size to the same size as the image receptor. This minimises the dose to the patient, and reduces the scattering of x-rays.

Q

What is the purpose of the spacer cone?

A

A device for indicating the direction of the beam and setting the ideal distance from the focal spot on the target to the skin.
