Citing evidence is identifying information in the text that support that were understanding, and using that evidence to explain our ideas
In context: we have been citing evidence by going back in the text and supporting our understanding with specific evidence.
Infer
To infer means we have to connect something in the text with some information from other parts of the text or from our background knowledge
In context: You need to infer by making a statement about your character than supporting that statement with details
Horizon
The line or circle that forms the apparent boundary between the earth and sky
In context: “The smudge on the horizon gained color as Nya drew nearer; changing the haze gray to olive green.”
Gourd
A dried and excavated shell used as a bottle, dipper, flask etc.
In context: “Nya took the hollowed gourd that was tied to the handle of the plastic container.”
Ritual
An established or prescribed procedure for a religious or other rite
In context: “The kind that were given to the boys in the Salva’s village as part of the ritual of becoming a man.”

To examine critically, so as to bring out the essential elements or main points
In context: You need to analyze the evidence in order to come to a conclusion.
