Battle of El Alamein
In Egypt the British stopped the German Afrika korps in July. The Afrika korps wanted to take the Suez Canal so they tried to invade Egypt.
Battle of Bulge
The Germans quickly pushed the Allied forces back about 65 miles, creating a huge bulge in the Allied lines this gave the battle its name. This was also the last major German offensive in the war.
Battle of Britain
The Luftwaffe or German Air Force began attacking the RAF (Royal Air Force) and their airfields. Hitler later began bombing large British cities, but The RAF quickly beat the Germans back.
Battle of Stalingrad
The German commander at Stalingrad defied Hitler and surrendered to save his remaining troops. The battle thus became a key turning point of the war.
D-day
Hundreds of thousands of Allied troops landed in German occupied France. The Allied soldiers were led by American general Omar Bradley.

Benito Mussolini leader of Italy was overthrown in 1943. Adolf Hitler leader of Germany he later committed suicide in 1945. Joseph Stalin led the Soviet Union and lived through the war.

Italy was fascist, Germany was led by the Nazi party, and the Soviet Union was communist
Why did Great Britain and France declare war?
They declared war, because Germany had declared war on Poland who Britain and France pledged to defend.

Why is US important in the war?
The U.S. helped stop the Japanese advance in the pacific, they helped defend and take North Africa and Italy. The U.S. also led the battle in D-day and ended the war with Japan.
What is appeasement and isolationism? What do they have to do with the war?
Appeasement: A policy of avoiding war with an aggressive nation by giving in to its demands. Isolationism: Avoiding involvement in the affairs of other countries.
Chester Nimitz
Led the U.S. Pacific Fleet and was determined to stop the Japanese advance.
General Mac Arthur
Commander of American and Filipino forces in the Philippines, he left the islands in 1942 vowing to return.
General Rommel
Nicknamed the desert fox for his bold, surprise attacks he led the German Afrika Korps.
