The Balkan Peninsula was a hotbed of nationalist and ethnic rivalries. The Slavic people wanted independence from Austria-Hungary, and Serbia supported them. This lead to Serbian terrorist, Gavrilo Princip, to murder Franz Ferdinand to advance the cause of the unification of the Slavic people.
