AEF (American Expeditionary Force)
A group of 4.8 million American Soldiers fighting in Europe under the command of John J. Pershing.
Boston Police Strike
A group that went on strike in hopes of achieving higher pay, better working conditions, and shorter hours. Their strike resulted in an increase in criminal activity, and eventually the National Guard was brought in.
Central Powers
Germany, Austria-Hungary, Ottoman Empire & Bulgaria
Committee on Public Information/George Creel
A committee centred around gaining support for the war effort. They focused mostly on the recruitment of soldiers. They did this through propaganda, 4-Minute Men, war bonds, and generally building enthusiasm.
Espionage & Sedition Acts of 1917
Used in conjunction by A. Mitchell Palmer to combat communism; targeted those who were seen as undermining the government. They essentially took away the freedom of speech.
Wilson’s Fourteen Points
A list of fourteen points made by Woodrow Wilson. They mostly focused on self determination of nations and the redefining of borders. Along with these ideals, they were also centred around getting rid of colonies and mandates. They also emphasised the importance of freedom of the seas, free trade, and a League of Nations.
ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)
A nonpartisan, nonprofit organisation whose mission was to defend the individual rights that the Constitution guaranteed. Defended the targets of the Palmer Raids, immigrants, trade unionists, socialists, and communists.
