What does MAIN stand for?
Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism and Nationalism
What is militarism?
The belief that one’s army should be bigger than others. This also increased the temptation to use those troops and artillery.
What were the two alliances in WWI and who did they consist of?
Triple Entente - Britain, France and Russia
Triple Alliance - Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy
What is imperialism?
The belief and race to gain control over other countries and empires. This leads to many countries seeing each other as major threats.
What is nationalism?
The belief and extreme pride in one’s country. This was taken to such extremes that other countries went to war with each other.
Who was assassinated on the 28th of June 1914?
Archduke Franz Ferdinand
Where was Franz Ferdinand assassinated?
In the Bosnian city of Sarajevo, he was shot outside a cafe
What was the Schlieffen plan?
The idea from the Germans to quickly defeat France first and then to face Russia. This would in theory prevent a double front.
What is a double front?
When a war is being fought on two frontlines. This means an army would have to split in two to hold both fronts back.
List the key parts of a trench in WWI.
Duckboards, fire steps, dugouts, periscopes, sandbags, barbed wire and gas bells.
What is trench foot?
A disease caused by cold, dirty and wet conditions. This was especially found in the trenches during WWI, therefore it being called trench foot.
