what is militarism?
building up an military to have the biggest military or and arms race
what is an alliance?
countries making deals with other countries to help them in case something were to happen
what is imperialism?
countries invading others to get the most land/power
what is nationalism?
the idea that your country is better than all others
what were the years of WWI?
1914-1918
what was the US policy during the start of the war?
to remain neutral (isolationism)
what were specific factors that pulled the US into the war?
unrestricted submarine warfare, US businessmen help funding the allies, the Zimmermann telegram, sinking of the Lusitania, germany invading neutral belgium
what were the triple alliance?
Germany, Italy (joined 1915), Austria-Hungary, Turkey (Ottoman Empire)
who were the alliances?
United Kingdom, Russia, France
why did Russia drop out of the war?
the Russian revolution started
why did the Russian revolution start?
people were starving to death and the war was going terribly for them
what was unrestricted submarine warfare?
germany stopping supplies going to the united kingdom
why were the US businessmen wanting the allies to win?
the businessmen helped fund the allies so if they had lost they would have lost all their money
what was the zimmermann telegram?
germany saying that if america declared war that mexico should declare war on america and then would gain some of the united states
what was the sinking of the lusitania?
a passenger ship was sunk and some americans were onboard
what were the rumors about germany invading neutral belgium?
there were rumors that innocents were being killed in belgium
what were liberty bonds?
the government would help the businesses stay in business but then the government would have to pay them back causing the government to go into debt
what was the espionage act?
if you spoke out against the draft you would be put into jail
what was the sedition act?
could not criticize the war or government or draft when the US is at war
what was Schenk vs. Court?
court case after shank was put into jail because of criticizing the US during the war (court ruled against him)

the government would say what price you could sell your products at
what were the controversial actions taken by US when entering the war?
the selective service act, war industries board, liberty bonds, espionage act, sedition act, schenk vs. court
