What was the Home Front?
The people left behind to keep Britain going as most of the men had left to fight.
How did the Home Front contribute to women earning the vote?
Women impressed men by doing the jobs that had earlier been seen as “men`s work”, showing that women were equal to men.
Why did some people change their surnames during the war?
People, no matter how loyal to Britain, were treated with hostility if their last names were German.
Why did the term ‘lions led by donkeys’ arise?
The term referred to the soldiers as lions: brave and fearless, being led by dim-witted generals who sent them on suicide missions, using old tactics that failed spectacularly under new weaponry.
What were the main weapons used in WW2?
Shells, machine guns, and gas.
What was named ‘champion of the battlefield’?
Machine guns- they could cut down hundreds at a time
Why were trenches dug in zig-zags?
For protection. Should enemy soldiers get inside the trench, one shot would kill far less soldiers before hitting a wall, as opposed to killing many soldiers in a straight line.
When were trenches first used?
In the Battle of Marne
What mental illness could a soldier suffer because of their experience in any war?
Shell shock (PDSD)
What did Hitler do that could have started the war?
Went against the Treaty of Versailles
Why was World War 2 described as ‘Total War’?
It wasn`t just soldiers at risk- innocent civilians at home were in danger.
What was the aim of ariel bombing?
To destroy key buildings in enemy countries and to bomb the country into submission.
Which country was worse affected by bombing, Britain or Germany?
