WW1 Warfare Flashcards
What was Germany’s plan called
The Schlieffen Plan
What was the Schiffen plan
It was a plan made by the Germans to bypass French defences by going through Belgium and taking France before going east and taking out Russia as they take long to get ready.
Why did the schiffen plan go wrong
Because the Germans expected the belgians to be a push over but they fought bravely and held the Germans back,Then the British Expeditionary Force held the Germans back at Mons and the Russians had gotten ready quicker than usual so they were now having to dig Trenches
What did the Schiffen plan Rely on
It heavily relied on luck and speed as there were many factors that had to go right like the Russians not getting ready quickly enough the British not defending their allies and Belgium being a push over.
The war became a war of…
Attrition
What were the conditions in the allied trenches especially like
They were absolutely terrible the dead bodies and food scraps attracted rats that grew extrodinarily large,There was water and mud in the trenches causing the soldiers to have “trench foot” and overall it was extremely unhygenic
How many days a month would a batallion normally spend in the line of fire
5 days
What was the food like
The food had to be rationed and even though at the start they were fed well over time the conditions got worse and the food did too.
What are duckboards
Wooden boards placed on the ground to stop troops sinking
What is a fire step
A step that soldiers stood on and fired from over the top
What is a periscope
A scope that allowed troops to see over the top without being shot
Dugouts
Rooms dug out the back wall of the trenches orders were recieved by telephone
What is Artillery
Huge guns that fired enourmous explosive or poisonous shells
What is a gas bell
It is a bell used to tell troops to put masks on
