Battle of Somme
The battle of WW1 fought by British&French against the Germans. Fought at the river Somme in France. More than 3 million men fighting. 1 million were killed. (July 1- November 18 1916)

German vs Allied armies fought in the general area of Ypres
Battle of Vimy Ridge
Canada’s most celebrated victory. When the four divisions of Canadian Corps fought together for the first time and attacked and captured Vimy Ridge from Germans. (April 9-12 1917)
Conscientious Objectors
A person who has claimed the right to refuse to perform military service.
Military Service Act (1917)
A controversial law allowing the conscription of Canadian men for service in the final years of WW1
Regulation 17
A regulation of the Ontario conservative government designed to shut down French language schools.
War measures act
A federal statue adopted by parliament in 1914 after the outbreak of WW1. It gave broad powers to the Canadian government to maintain security.
Wartime Elections Act
An act that allowed women who were wives, widows, mothers and sisters of soldiers serving overseas the right to vote.
Income Tax
A tax levied on incomes, especially on an annual government tax on incomes.
Triple Alliance
An alliance between Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.
Triple Entente
Linking of the Russian Empire, French Third Republic, and United kingdoms of Great Britian&Ireland.
Nationalism
An extreme form of patriotism and loyalty to ones country. A significant cause of WW1.
Habeas Corpus
A recourse in law that allows a person to request and unlawful detonation/imprisonment to a court and request that the court order the custodian of the person.
Arthur Currie
A senior officer of the Canadian Army who fought in WW1. First Canadian commander of the Canadian corps who was one of the most capable commanders.
Sam Hughs
The Canadian Minister of Militia and Defence during WW1. The last Liberal-conservative cabinet minister until he was dismissed from his cabinet post.
Ross Rifle
A hunting rifle that was an unreliable weapon for WW1. It was known to jam when firing, and the failure in battle caused the embarrassment for the conservative government’s Prime Minister Robert Borden.
U-Boat
“Underwater boat” A German Submarine.
Trench Warfare
A type of land warfare that uses trenches to shelter the soldiers from artillery.
Armistice
An agreement made by opposing sides to stop fighting; an agreement between allies&Germany that ended fighting in Western front
Lusitania
A British passenger ship a that German submarine sank during WW1. This caused diplomatic uproar.
Robert Borden
The Canadian Prime Minister from 1911-1920. He led Canada through one of its most difficult times in history. He orchestrated its enormous contribution to war effort while managing growing social&apolitical problems.
Constriction
The act of tightening something; making it more narrow
Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF)
The designation of field force created by Canads for service overseas. It fielded see real combat formations on the Western Front in France&Belgium.
Victory Bonds
A bond sold by the government to help raise the funds to pay for war. It was a loan that could be redeemed with interest in 5, 10, or 20 years.
