WW1 - causes Flashcards
What is the immediate cause of WW1? When did this event happen? What happened?
The Sarajevo Incident (28th June, 1914)
Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist Gavrilo Princip.
Why did the immediate cause of WW1 happen?
Ferdinand was assassinated because he was the nephew of Emperor Franz Joseph I, and heir to Austria’s throne; and Princip belonged to a secret nationalist, anti-Austrian society called the Black Hand.
Name the alliances formed within Europe before WW1, and the countries in them.
The Central Powers/ Triple Alliance — Germany, Austria-Hungary, Italy
The Allies/ Triple Entente — Great Britain, France, Russia, Serbia
Why did the immediate cause of WW1 eventually lead to the outbreak of a world war?
After archduke Ferdinand was assassinated, Serbia was attacked by Austria-Hungary. However, since both of the countries were involved in alliances, their allies also got involved in this incident and led to a bigger scale war which involved many other European countries and their allies and colonies in the other parts of the world.
