Militarism
- the idea that the government should have a strong military and be prepared to use it aggressively to spread ideas.
Alliances - a union between countries for mutual benefit.
Nationalism - being proud of your country.
Imperialism - The policy of a stronger country taking over a weaker country for its own benefit.
Assassination of Franz Ferdinand - Duke of Austria-Hungary was assassinated and Austria-Hungary went to war with the country the assassin was from (Serbia) which eventually caused WWI.
Central Powers (Triple Alliance) - Germany and Austria-Hungary. Later the Ottoman Empire and Bulgaria.
Allied Powers (Triple Entente) - France
Britain
Neutral - not helping either side in a conflict.
Submarine Warfare - Used submarines to sneak up on ships and sink them with torpedoes.
Trench Warfare - A type of fighting where both sides build deep trenches as a defense against the enemy.
Woodrow WIlson - President of the US during the war.
Neutrality - Being neutral.
Lusitania - Ship that got sunk by Germany. Americans mad because Americans died on the ship.
Zimmerman Telegram - Germany tried to get Mexico to secretly be allies with them. British Intelligence found out about it.
Sussex Pledge - Germany would search ships before sinking them.
Role of women - worked in factories

Liberty Bond - sold to support war. More money promised to be paid back later to those who bought Liberty Bonds.
Propaganda - misleading information
War Industries Board - Government Agency that helped the U.S. economy shift from consumer goods to war goods.
Rationing - to allow people to have a certain amount of a good.
Results of the War
Armistice - an agreement made by both sides to stop fighting.
League of Nations - Union of Nations whose goal was to keep the peace.
Treaty of Versailles - Germany has to take all blame for the war. $33 billion in reparations (cost of war). Germany military limited- 100
- Alsace-Lorraine returned to France.
Fourteen Points - President Wilson’s peace plan.
Big Four - Woodrow Wilson- U.S. David Lloyd George- Britain. Georges Clemenceau- France. Vittorio Orlando- Italy.
Reparations - Compensation.
