What forced men to join the army?
Conscription in 1916
Reasons men refused to join?
They didn’t want to die, leave their families or kill people, we’re scared of war and for religious or political reasons
6 conditions in the trenches?
Boring due to stalemate. No privacy and plank beds. Troops spent 8 days in front line, 4 in reserve. Everyone has lice and couldn’t stop the spread. Giant rats that would eat dead soldiers. Constant spread of disease.
Types of new technology?
Tanks, Rifles, Planes, Gas, Machine Guns, Artillery.
What is DORA?
The Defence of the Realm Act, passed on 8th August 1914, gave the government more power over the people and could control their lives to win the war.
DORA restrictions?
illegal to spread false rumours, Beer watered down, Pub opening hours cut, curfews introduced, BST introduced, Illegal to feed birds or ducks.
Types of women’s war work?
Police. Women’s Land Army. Nurses. Transport. Factories. Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps and the Armed Forces.
Suffragettes full name and leader?
Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) and Emmeline Pankhurst.
Types of methods used by suffragettes?
Violent. Changed themselves to parliament and broke windows

Peaceful. Held meetings, demonstrations and signed petitions.
What is the Cat and Mouse Act?
A law introduced in 1913 which said if women in prison refused to eat they would be let out when their health began to suffer and rearrested when they recovered to finish their sentence.
Why did coal mining and shipbuilding decline after war?
Coal mining- Less demand due to electricity , mines became nationalised
Shipbuilding- Less demand from navy, Foreign competion
