Q

What happened during the battle of Amiens, August 1918?

A

Using more coordinated Aircraft, Tanks, Artillery and Infantry; the British broke through the German front and forced their retreat. After a series of battles, this helped them end the war

21
Q

What did tanks do?

A

They were intended to be armoured barricades that soldiers could advance behind with machine guns and cannons added later.

22
Q

First example of tanks being used:

A

The battle of Somme where a group of 36 tanks broke through German front lines

23
Q

Benefits of tanks:

A

They could cross rough terrain, crash through barbed wire and go over trenches. Anti-tank weapons weren’t common.

24
Q

Downsides of tanks:

A

They are very slow and unreliable: many broke down or caught on fire.

25
Q

What was Mustard Gas?

A

Mustard gas was yellow (hence the name) gas that caused internal bleeding and took around 5 weeks to kill someone.

26
Q

What did Chlorine and Phosgene gas do?

A

It choked people to death

27
Q

What was a benefit of poison gas?

A

It could clear trenches before attacks so that troops could cross no man’s land safely

28
Q

Name an example of chlorine gas being used.

A

In 1915 at Ypres used against French Agerian troops who ran away or died from it

29
Q

Who and how was poison gas quickly adapted to?

A

The Canadians quickly figured out how to use gas masks and handkerchiefs soaked in urine to stop the gas

30
Q

What was a drawback of poison gas?

A

If the wind direction changed it could be blown back at those who released it

31
Q

What was aircraft?

A

Primitive wood and an engine that flew over enemy trenches to look for artillery batteries

32
Q

When was aircraft used?

A

From 1914 and then used to drop bombs

33
Q

What was used before aircraft for scouting?

A

Spotting balloons (Hot air balloons)

34
Q

What were some drawbacks of aircraft?

A

It was very dangerous to fly and if it set on it would spray back into the pilots face

35
Q

What were flame throwers?

A

Tanks filled with petrol jelly that was sprayed out of a long tube and ignited

36
Q

When we’re flame throwers first used?

A

At Hooge (1915) where British and French troops were burnt alive and died

37
Q

What was a downside of flame throwers?

A

If you shot the fuel tank it would explode

38
Q

What was a benefit of flame throwers?

A

The nozzle could be pointed down a trench and easily burn everyone inside

39
Q

What was the ‘creeping barrage’?

A

A technique where soldiers would go over the top while artillery shot, this was very effective

40
Q

What was mining?

A

Where troops would dig tunnels under no man’s land and set off explosives underneath the enemy’s trenches

41
Q

Why was mining dangerous?

A

The mines could collapse, it was hard to breath and if you met the enemy’s mine you would have to fight in a tight space with shovels

42
Q

When did Gavrillo Princip shoot Archduke Franze Ferdinand?

A

June 28 1914

43
Q

Who was part of the Triple Alliance?

A
