what is the language that would enable them to understand
Marshall Islanders Maps
palm stick grid: open sea
curved sticks: wave fronts
shells: location of islands
threads: where islands come into view
Wurman’s NC State Project
students created topographic maps of 50 cities
the maps were created at the same scale in order to compare the size of each city
Yamanote Railway Map
the diagram of the railway map is more abstract so the user can understand how to get from point A to point B using the railway (railway moves in a circle around the city)
it removes information that does not affect the railway user that might be more important to a walker or driver (actual ways the route moves, specific turns and shapes of the route)
space between things: opposites
Essentially noticing the negative space, figure/ground relationships
Wurmans example: outline of a vase looks like two side profiles facing one another
