What did whilem wundt do?
opened the first lab dedicated entirely to psychcology. tried to analyse the nature of human consciousness through a method called introspection.
what were wundts main objectives?
try and develop theories about mental processes such as language and perception. co-workers recorded their experiences of various stimuli they were presented with.
what were the observational categories?
though images and sensations
what is structuralism?
what wundt did during introspection. isolating the structure of consciousness. stimulus experienced were always presented in the same order and the same instructions were issued to all ppt.
evaluate wundts introspection
S- methods were systematic and well-controlled, recorded in controlled environment of the lab, extraneous variables were not a factor, procedures were standardised. research can be considered a fore runner to later scientific approaches
c- subjective data, replied on slef report methods, subjective, (influenced by a personal perspective) ppt may have hidden thoughts . difficult to establish meaningful laws of behaviour. flawed, would not meet scientific criteria
