Mountain Range
A group or a line of mountains or mountain ridges, closely related in position and direction, usually all under a particular name (Himalayas, The Alps)
River Basin
The total area of a land drained by a river and its tributaries (streams and creaks) (Amazon basin)
Tributary
A smaller river/stream flowing into a larger stream or main stem of a lake or river. (Missouri river, tributary of Mississippi river)
Floodplains
A generally flat area of land next to a river. Stretches from banks of a river to the outer edges of a valley. Gets flooded when the river floods. Has very fertile land due to the deposited river sediments. (Mesopotamia)
Equator
An imaginary line was drawn in the middle of both poles, dividing the earth into the southern and northern hemispheres and being the baseline for latitude 0 degrees.
Longitude
The distance of a place east or west of a line established through the North and South poles, and Greenwich, England called the Meridian. Measured in degrees form -180 to 180.
Latitude
The distance north or south of the equator measured in degrees from -90 to 90.
Elevation
The height of a geographical feature or location on the Earth’s surface above or below mean sea level.
Plateau
A large, flat area of land higher than the area of land that surrounds it. (Tibetan Plateau)
Peninsula
A long piece of land almost fully surrounded by water or sticking out from a larger piece of land into a large body of water (Korean Peninsula)
Gulf
An inlet from the ocean or sea extending into the landmass, with the land curving inward. Typically has a narrower opening than a bay but that is not always observable. (Persian Gulf)
Archipelago
A group of small islands or a sea in which there are many small islands (Hawaii, Japan)
Climate
A region’s long term weather patterns, usually tracked for at least 30 years
Monsoon
A seasonal prevailing wind in South and Southeast Asia, blowing in from the southwest and bringing rain between May and September (wet monsoon), and blowing from northeast between October and April (dry monsoon)
Altitude
the vertical elevation of an object above a surface (such as sea level or land) of a planet or natural satellite
