Scanning challenges
Many challenges to scanning, must be aware of challenges and actively employ tactics to combat them
Monotony
Sit upright, do not let your attention drift
Fatigue
Keep hydrated, exercise during break, stay out of sun during break
Distractions
Stay focused, keep patron activities safe and orderly
Blind spots
Adjust location, check all blind spots (under stand)
Water movement and surface distortion of water
Be aware of the normal appearance of the bottom of the pool; know the appearance of drains, colored tiles or painted depth markings
The RID factor
Recognition, intrusion, distraction
Knowing how to recognize those in danger, intrusion occurs when secondary duties intrude on primary responsibility, distractions affect patron surveillance
