golden in the surface but corrupt underneath

melting pot theory- immigration groups will tend to “melt together” abandoning their individual cultures and eventually becoming fully assimilated into American society
mixed salad theory- metaphor for the way a multicultural society can integrate different cultures while maintaining their separate identities
