Explain the difference between the following:
1-495 Inner loop and outer loop
1-270 Main Lanes and the CD Lanes
The Inner Loop of 1-495 goes from Virginia to Washington DC, as you continue to travel on the inner loop of the beltway the exit numbers decrease. The Outer Loop of 1-495 goes from Washington DC to Virginia, as you continue to travel the outer loop of the beltway the exit numbers increase. The 1-270 Main Lanes are the main lanes of travel, to include the HOV Lanes. The Main Lanes require the driver to either merge in order to continue on l-270, or exit in order to continue to a specific exit. The CD Lanes (Collector/Distributor) are lanes that allow drivers to travel shorter distances without committing themselves onto a roadway with limited entry and exit points. The CD Lanes allow drivers to move to and from the Main Lanes acting as merge lanes to access exit ramps, also acting as on ramps for drivers accessing the Main
Lanes.
