EXPLICIT
Directly stated; information that the author tells
IMPLICIT
Not directly stated; information that requires the reader to draw a conclusion based on the details
INFER
Draw a conclusion based on the details in the text
MAIN IDEA/CENTRAL IDEA
What the text is about; the central message or point the author is trying to make.
THEME
The overall message or lesson developed in a text.
CLAIM
The author’s main point: for argument, a debate statement
SUPPORTING DETAILS/EVIDENCE
Facts, Statistic, examples, quotes, and other relevant information to support the main idea.
QUOTATION (QUOTE)
Used to support main ideas, inferences, etc, (direct words)
INFERENCE
Information that is implied from the text.
SUMMARY
A brief telling of key events or details
SETTING
Where and When the story takes place
MOOD
The overall feeling or atmosphere
CONFLICT
The problem in the story
INTERNAL
When the character has to figure out a problem within himself or herself
EXTERNAL
When the Character is facing a problem outside of himself or herself.
Point of view
The perspective form which the story is being told.
1st Person
Is in the story and tells us what happens.
3rd Person limited
Is the narrator is telling the story. We only know the thoughts and feeling of ONE character in the story
3rd Person omniscient
Is the narrator is telling the story we know more than one.
PLOT
What happens in the story; the main events.
RESOLUTION
When the conflict gets resolved.
TONE
The authors attutude toward the topic or the mood created by the author
