Article in a publication expressing opinion of editors/publishers
Personal essay
Essay written to express authors feelings/experiences. Written in 1st person using “I”
Expository essay
Essay that describes how to do something; analyze ideas, objects or written works, describe a process

Appropriate diction/tone
Rhetorical question
Question asked to create dramatic effect/make a point rather than to get an answer
Compare and contrast
Presenting differences/similarities of 2 pieces of writing

Discusses why an event happens/what impact the event may have as result

Presenting positive aspects of a topic then discussing negative aspects
Question and answer
Essay structured in a way that a question is proposed and persuasive answer follows
Emotional appeal
Writing that plays on readers emotions to sway their opinion. Also known as pathos
Anecdotal evidence
Evidence based on hearsay/second hand reports. May or may not be trustworthy
Expert testimony
Opinion on a topic given by recognized specialist in field being discussed
Statistical evidence
Measurement of an aspect of a population derived from study of a small sample of people
