People do not have a close relationship with their neighbors anymore
In the past, neighbors formed an essential part of people’s social life. However, it is not a reality anymore, since we barely know the name of those who live next door. There are several reasons to explain this change, but also some ways to remedy it. The key facts are outlined below.
There are many explanations of why neighbors do not get acquainted nowadays. First, our lifestyles have become more mobile. It means people move houses quite frequently, which reduce the chances for one get to know well people who live in a specific neighborhood. Secondly, many of us have to commute long distances to work. As a result, closer relationships are built with work peers rather than neighbors. Lastly, technology has introduced us to a series of distractions, ranging from smartphones to TV streaming services, such as Netflix. Therefore, the nature of our entertainment has become more selfish.
Turning to possible solutions, the first key thing that could be done is using technology in favor of the community. For instance, a resident of the neighborhood might create a virtual group in WhatsApp or Facebook in order to plan parties or social events so that the other inhabitants could get to know each other well. In addition, people should try to be more polite when they bump into other residents. Just a simple act of greeting people when you run into them in the elevator could be the starting point of a new friendship. Lastly, becoming more available is essential to build a good rapport with neighbors. None of the solutions above will work if people do not find the time to spare engaging in such social activities.
Overall, although neighbors have grown apart in recent years, it is up to them to change the nature of their relationship. A mix of effort, politeness and technology might be more than enough to do the trick.
