Writing Algebraic Expressions Flashcards
What is a VARIABLE?
A symbol, usually a letter, that stands for an unknown number. If a variable occurs more than once in an expression, it refers to the same number each time.
Ex. n, t, b
What is a CONSTANT?
A number that does NOT change.
Ex. 4 + s (the 4 is the constant)
What is a COEFFICIENT?
A number being multiplied by a variable. Ex. 6 is the coefficient in 6t. The six is a number and a factor. If no number is visible, the assumed coefficient is always 1.
Ex. p = 1p
What is an EXPRESSION?
A mathematical phrase with numbers, operation signs (+ - x ÷), and variables. There is NO EQUAL SIGN.
What is a TERM?
Each part of an expression that is separated by a + sign or a -sign is called a term.
