What is writing?
Writing is one of the ways people use to transmit their thoughts to others.
Writing assists people with other language tasks as well.
What is writing good for?
Helps you express yourself.
Prepares you for education and employment.
Is how most people in the world communicate.
Can be a great tool to help you know more about the way you think.
Types of writing assignments
Expressive: personal feelings and observations of the writer. Ex.: personal diaries.
Exploratory: deals with specific answers to specific questions. Ex.: definitions, surveys, problem solutions.
Informative: telling facts to someone who doesn’t know much about the topic. Ex.: news articles, book reports.
Types of writing assignments. Part 2
Scientific: transmission of data and results. Ex.: application of a theory, testing a hypothesis.
Literary: expression of the writer’s message. Seeks to entertain the reader. Ex.: plays, novellas, TV scripts.
Persuasive: seeks to convince the reader of the writer’s view, regarding an issue. Ex.: political speeches, editorials, advertising campaigns.
How is the formative assessment feedback?
Formative Assessment: Feedback
The student must understand that the teacher is not trying to humiliate him or her with the comments on the written work.
The student considers the teacher’s suggestions for the following assignments.
The student becomes a better writer because he or she is able to identify his or her mistakes and correct them without the teacher’s assistance.
The summative assessment

Tests can motivate some students.
Summative assessment promotes extrinsic motivation.
Tips for writing evaluating
Avoid over-correction (crossings-out, red ink, underlining).
Use a list of written symbols (S = spelling, WO = word order). It makes the correction look less damaging and promotes student self-evaluation.
Write comments at the end of the piece of written work to boost the student’s self-esteem.
What are the writing teaching strategies?
Teachers must select a worth technique depending on the level of the students
Get students into the Writing process which contains:
Prewriting (outlining, drafting)
Composing
Revision
Feedback or evaluation
Some of the strategies to prewriting are: Brainstorming Talking and listening in pairs or groups Looking at art Listening to music Role playing Observing with all senses Reading
Why people fail to learn?
When people fail to learn is because of one of the three factors:
Lack of motivation
Lack of ability or aptitude
Poor teaching
What are some advantages for language learning?
Advisability for Learning a Language
Start at before 12/13 years (Critical Period)
Having self-confidence
Getting highly motivated
Being very sociable and relate with speakers of other languages
Being an extrovert
Have the will to take risks in speaking the L2
Good memory
