Wrist joint replacement Flashcards
What are the two types of wrst joint replacement?
Flexible hinge
Total wrist
What is the main indication for wrist joint replacement?
Pain associated with RA and OA
When is arthrodesis the preferred option in wrist joint pathology?
When only the radiocarpal joint is affected
Especially young patient and for those who through their activities exert large and regular loads on their wrist
How many tendons cross the wrist?
24
Where are the strong flexor tendons of the wrist found?
Carpal tunnel (formed by the transverse arch arrangement of the carpals)
What is the primary function of the distal radioulnar joint?
Pronation and supination
How is a diseased distal radioulnar joint treated?
Around 1cm of the distal ulna is excised and the remaining distal ulna is carefully stabilised with soft tissues
Where is the overall composite motion of the wrist centred?
Fixed point on the capitate
How much flexion and extension does the wrist normally allow?
80-90 degrees flexion
70-80 degrees extension
How much abduction and adduction does the wrist allow?
15-20 degrees abduction
35 degrees adduction
What range of motion of the wrist is satisfactory for activities of daily living?
10 degrees flexion
35 degrees extension
What position is the wrist set at in arthrodesis?
20 to 30 degrees extension
What type of joint is the radiocarpal joint?
Condyloid joint
How does the shape of the radiocarpal joint affect its stability in different directions?
Greater radius of curvature of abduction-adduction (more stability)
Smaller radius for flexion-extension (less stability but greater arc of motion)
How does the carpal tunnel reduce the moment about the wrist joint?
Maintains the strong flexor tendons close to the axis of rotation of the wrist joint
