wounds injuries definitions Flashcards
acute
single force causes traumatic injury
chronic
several small forces over a period of time cause injury
abrasion
result of the skin scraping on a surface
blister
caused by repeated friction on the skin; fluid forms b/w dermis and epidermis
contusion
(bruise) damage to superficial capillaries from trauma
incision
clean cut made from a sharp edge
laceration
irregular tear in the skin
avulsion
severe laceration resulting in complete separation of the skin
strain
traumatic injury to muscle/tendon
1st degree strain
micro tear of collagen fibers; mild pain, local tenderness, no loss of fcn
2nd degree strain
rupture of tissue; moderate pain, weakness, loss of fcn
3rd degree strain
major loss of tissue continuity; severe loss of fcn and pain; decrease in pain due to nerve separation; palpable divot in muscle
muscle cramps/spasm
painful involuntary muscle contractions; chronic: alternating contract and relax; tonic: continual contraction over period of time; caused by biochemical imbalance, muscle fatigue
tendinopathy
pain and swelling of tendon/sheath; tendinitis, tendinosis, tenosynovitis - sheath, peritendinitis
myositis ossificans
calcification palpable mass
