What is acid mantle?
sebum and sweat mixed up on the skins surface to form a protective layer.
What does the acid mantle do?
help to protect the skin from the elements
inhibits growth of harmful bacteria
skin in more prone to damage and infection if the acid mantle is disrupted
Dermis contains:
nerves, sweat glands, sebaceous glands and hair follicles
purpose of nerves
receptors for feeling pain, warmth, cold and pressure, many are located by hair follicles
purpose of sweat glands
assist us in thermoregulation
sebaceous glands
secretes sebum
hair follicles
consist of outer layer of collagen from dermis, inner layer is epidermal cells
subcutaneous tissue
loose connective tissue lying under the dermis, contains lymphatic and deep tissue vessels and nerves passing through the dermis. channels nutrients and oxygen to the dermis via capillaries and acts as a cushion
Fascia
white and shinny in appearance. sheath covering for muscles, nerves and blood vessels. acts as support so the muscle can act as a single unit

sacral/coccyx greater trochanter - hip area ischial tuberosity - butt area heel lateral malleolus - ankle area
