Wound Healing Flashcards
What is the most common bacteria isolated from traumatized tissues?
Strep sp.
What Ab would you treat a Strep infected wound ? How long will the animal have to be on the Ab for?
Penicillin
Penicillin-Ampicillin
TMS +/- Penicillin
for at least 5 days !
What vaccination should be given if a horse has a wound ?
No prior immunization –> give tetanus toxoid and tetanus antitoxin
If LA has been immunized –> tetanus toxoid (booster)
What are the two NSAIDs typically used in wound management in LA?
Phenylbutazone (Bute)
Banamine
Phenylbutazone can be given IM. T/F
NEVERR!!
It will cause muscle necrosis. Only IV or Orally
Banamine can be injected IM. T/F
TRUE. also IV or administered PO
What is the function of NSAID in wound management?
Block prostaglandin synthesis
Decrease inflammation and pain
Improves overall well being
When can a wound be closed primarily?
- within 4-6 hours after injury
- less than 10^6 bacteria/g of tissue
- no signs of infection
This is known as the GOLDEN PERIOD
What is meant by first intention healing?
Healing without fibroplasia - obtained by apposition of wound edges by suturing
What is the goal of second intention healing?
Provide a clean/optimal area for wound healing to occur.
Wound will heal by fibroplasia, contraction and epithelialization
What is meant by period of fibroplasia?
= period of rapid collagen synthesis (4-16 days)
How does epithelialization occur ?
- Mobilization
- Migration
- Mitosis
What is meant by delayed primary healing?
Contaminated wound left open until infection is under control. WOUND is CLOSED before FIBROPLASIA begins (= 4 days)
When is cold therapy indicated ?
Acute cases.
- promotes vasoconstriction
- decreased metabolism
- cutaneous anesthesia
- cell death
When is heat therapy indicated ?
Chronic cases.
- vasodilation
- decrease pain and inflammation
- accelerate healing
- remove edema
