Wound Dressings / Materials Flashcards
Aquacel
Aquacel dressings are antimicrobial dressings
- -> made of hydrofiber technology (soft absorbent material that transforms into a gel on contact with wound fluid)
- -> locks in exudate and traps bacteria
- -> helps protects periwound skin and reduce maceration
- -> minimizes “dead space” where bacteria can grow
- -> maintains moisture balance within wound bed
- -> micro contours to wound bed
- supports non-traumatic dressing removal (as it turns to gel)
Aquacel EXTRA Dressings – absorbs drainage, covers wounds that are excreting pus or other fluids
Aquacel AG EXTRA dressings – 9 x more strength, 50% more absorbency, increased wear time
- controlled release of ionic silver as wound exudate is absorbed into dressing
What is Aquacel foam?
Aquacel foam dressings give you:
- a waterproof top layer that permits evaporation of excess moisture while protecting against viral/bacterial penetration
- allow pt to shower and bathe
- supports non-traumatic dressing removal
Acticoat
Antimicrobial Barrier Silver Dressing
- destroys bacteria within the dressing and at the wound site very quickly (in as little as 30 min!)
How does silver help wound healing?
Silver -impregnated products provide a sustained release of positively charged silver ions at the wound surface, which promotes wound healing and decreases infection by killing bacteria.
Actisorb Silver with Activated Charcoal dressing
Traps odour while providing an effective barrier to bacterial penetration, which may help reduce infection.
- the activated charcoal binds to bacteria and toxins in the dressing
- the silver kills bacteria
What are charcoal dressings used for?
To absorb/minimize odour from wounds.
- activated charcoal itself does not enhance wound healing
Wound odour is most effectively reduced by debridement of slough, reduction in bacterial levels, and frequent dressing changes.
Actisorb
a sterile primary dressing comprising an activated charcoal cloth impregnated with silver
- recommended for the management of odorous, infected wounds
What does “impregnated” mean?
Dressings, gauze, sponges, etc. that are saturated with a solution.
Iodine
Broad spectrum Topical antimicrobial for treatment of wounds and prevention of infection.
- penetrates the cell wall of microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, protozoa viruses…) damaged bacterial cell function
- dark brown colour
- prevents infections / treats localized or spreading infection
- slow release patches/iodine dressings allow low concentration to come into contact with wound exudate = minimized side effects
What are some types of wounds you can use iodine on?
Pressure ulcers, venous leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, minor burns, superficial skin-loss injuries
–> be aware of ppl with iodine sensitivity, impaired thyroid function, pregnancy…
Inadine (non-adherent)
Non-adherent dressing impregnanted with 10% iodine, and PEG base
- effective against bacteria (topical antimicrobial)
- decreased pain at dressing change
- reduces risk of damage to tissue and pain for its
Why can iodine sting? How often should it be applied?
Because of the osmotic loads delivered by higher concentrations of iodine in some preparations
- once the dressing has lost its colour, its assumed that the antiseptic effect has been lost and the dressings should be changed (1-3 times per weak normally)
Iodosorb Iodine Ointment/Paste
- peanut butter consistency..
Sterile antimicrobial
- for the topical treatment of chronic exuding wounds, infected wounds
- -> PROMOTES WOUND HEALING!
- -> cleans wound by absorbing fluids, removing exudate, slough and debris, and forming a gel over the wound surface
- -> as the gel absorbs exudate, iodine is released, killing bacteria and changing colour as the iodine is used up
- can be used under compression therapy
Paste = antibacterial
3M Tegaderm
What is tegaderm transparent film?
3M Tegaderm Hydrocolloid dressing square?
Used to cover and protect catheter sites and wounds
- maintains moist environment for wound healing or for debridement
- hydrocolloid adhesive rapidly absorbs exudate
- breathable, waterproof, skin conforming, germ-proof barrier!
- can be left on for 3-4 days
Tegaderm transparent = same as above but eliminated need for taping edges, is easy to clean, minimizes exudate leakage and is impermeable to liquids, bacteria and viruses
- -> used to secure IV sites, or used as a primary/seconfary dressing
- -> allows for visual view of wound through clear tape
Tegaderm hydrocolloid = can be worn up to 7 days
- inner hydrocolloid adhesive rapidly absorbs exudate to provide a long time wear
- dressing maintains moist wound environment for enhanced healing
Duoderm
- Duoderm Extra thin?
–> for exuding wounds
These dressings form a gel that creates a moist wound healing environment
- an outer film provides a waterproof barrier
- the foam layer is for thermal and mechanical protection
- hydrocolloid particles absorb exudate to form a soft, moist gel
- the dressings keep nerve endings moist, which helps to provide relief from discomfort
- can be worn for 7 days (unless uncomfortable, leakage, or signs of infection)
Duoderm Extra thin = used as a primary Hydrocolloid Dressing for dry to lightly exuding wounds
- can be used as a secondary dressing to secure an Aquacel dressing
- film provides a waterproof barrier over dressing
- -> designed to reduce risk of further skin breakdown due to friction
