Wound dressings Flashcards
1
Q
List 8 functions of wound dressings
A
- Protect wound from contamination
- Protect wound from trauma
- Protect wound from patient interference
- to absorb extudate
- limit movement of the wound
- reduce pain
- reduce tension on sutures
- to limit swelling on surgical site
2
Q
What should you be monitoring on a wound?
A
- Exudate – amount, colour and type
- Erythema (Reddening)
- Oedema
- Haematoma
- Pain
- Odour
3
Q
Types of wound
A
- Incision
- Laceration
- Abrasion
- Puncture
- Degloving
- Burn (cold and hot)
- GSW
- Surgical wound dehiscence
4
Q
How is a wound classified?
A
- Aetiology
- Depth of skin loss
- Contamination/infection
- Extent of soft tissue/bone involvement
- Duration since it happened
- Site
5
Q
Name 4 different types of wound dressing
A
- Adherent
- Non-adherent
- Absorbent
- Active
6
Q
Describe an adherent wound dressing
A
- Adheres to wound site, causing debridement on removal
- E.g. wet to dry
- Good for very necrotic wounds
7
Q
Describe a non-adherent wound dressing
A
- Protects wound from environment, absorbs some exudate
- E.g. Melonin, Primapore
- Good for low exudating wounds, surgicial incisions, pressure sores
8
Q
Describe an absorbent wound dressing
A
- Absorbs exudate, provides optimum moist environment
- E.g. Allevyn
- Good for exudating, granulating wounds
9
Q
Describe an active wound dressing
A
- Interact with wound to increase healing, provides moist environment
- Eg. Hydrogels (Intrasite)
- Good for moderate exudating wounds, sloughing
